Squirrel Problems in Attics

Getting Rid of Squirrels in Your Attic or Crawlspace

Attics are warm, dry shelter perfect for squirrels. Squirrels, rats, and raccoons commonly make nests in attics and crawlspaces. Squirrels can climb almost anything. Squirrels will chew an egged shaped hole in fascia board and even push aside loose bricks.

Once inside, squirrels build a nest, bringing food into the attic, to raise their young. Squirrels create a fire hazard, not only due to debris, but by chewing electrical wires. Squirrels teeth continually grow. The wires and wooden beams in attics are perfect spots to grind teeth. Squirrels use separate parts of your attic to store food and use the bathroom. Squirrels forage for food during the day, and scurry about your attic at night. Once your attic has the smell of food and urine it attracts more squirrels.

What Doesn't Work on Squirrels in Attics.

Moth Balls
Mothballs are pesticides that are harmful to humans who swallow them or inhale vapors at high concentrations. Moth Balls should not be used inside attics, wall voids, or crawlspaces. Using mothballs to get rid of squirrels in your attic is illegal. Since mothballs are registered pesticides it is illegal to use them in locations that are not on the label. Manufacturers do not claim effectiveness on squirrels, only moths. A common mistake is placing mothballs in an attic to repel squirrels. This is a misapplication and may cause a noxious odor throughout the home. Family members may experience adverse health effects or need to leave the home.
Trapping Squirrels in "Humane Traps"
Trapping squirrels is hard work. If you've never done it before, you have to learn how, or hire professionals. Squirrels must be released many miles away, or worse destroyed, because the squirrels may return. Squirrels are territorial. Inevitably another family of squirrels will take its place.
Excluding Squirrels from Home
A technique to get rid of squirrels in attics is placing hardware cloth over the holes. When squirrels nest in an attic for months or years they will chew back into houses with alarming speed. Squirrels are determined rodents. Use of the Squirrel Evictor and Rat Repeller doesn't require the homeowner to seal the holes. Squirrels are so annoyed by the flashing they leave willingly.
Rat Poison
Poisoning squirrels in the attic is not a good idea. Local laws may prohibit it. You’ll create a health hazard for your family. You definitely don't want to remove dead squirrels in your attic. Most rat and mouse poisons sold over-the-counter in hardware and grocery stores contain the anticoagulant poison brodifacoum as the active ingredient. Brodifacoum is highly dangerous and causes extreme suffering prior to death in squirrels and people. The product is notoriously non-selective and has the potential to kill domestic dogs and cats, wildlife, children, and even grown adults.
Ammonia to Repel Squirrels
Ammonia is a temporary fix, the aroma dissipates, squirrels come back. Ammonia is in household cleaners. It irritates the eyes, respiratory, digestive tracts, and skin. When mixed with bleach poisonous gas results. Amonia is flammable in compressed spaces like attics and strong ignition can result. Placing ammonia in an attic may be more of a fire hazard than squirrels.

Habitat Modification

Because a squirrel's interest in an area is based largely the availability of food, landscaping can be altered to reduce the desirability of the area to squirrels.

With any squirrel problem, you should first do the things that help your situation. Remove access to easy meals by securing garbage cans; fasten lids with rope, bungee cords or chains and tying handle to a stake driven into the ground. Remove bird feeders, and cut the tree limbs back around the house so squirrels do not have easy access to the roof. Don’t leave dog or cat food outside.

What squirrels want must be changed! Right now squirrels see your attic as a nice place to live. A nasty environment for squirrels must be created, an environment so nasty that squirrels will not want to be there. Here's the answer to your squirrel problems in a nutshell, pun intended.
